March/April 2005
Roy Brown at Casters has provided us with some great infromation this month! So get out there and fish!
I've been fishing the last couple of weeks in some of the wild streams in higher elevations in Western N.C. Fishing has been very good. The water levels are higher than normal and the temperatures have been bouncing between 49 and 51 degrees. Because of high water levels, a good drift is difficult to maintain, but I've been taking fish on top water bugs and nymphs. There are lots of hatches coming off. Many large mayflies--I do mean large (14 and12)--are hatching and most are the darker greys. Any baetis nymph will work in about a size 16. The rainbows are moving to spawn, the browns are following for the free meal, and the brookies--well they are just being brookies and hitting darn near anything! Good time to be on the water!!!
One other note. The high waters and flood conditions have washed a lot of trash into our creeks and rivers. So, when you go, carry a plastic bag and pick up some trash along the way. Every little effort will help.
Good Luck and Watch out for trees (they eat flies too!)
